NEWS:Viagra Treats Enlarged Hearts other Than Erectile Dysfunction

AM Source : Health News ExpressNewsline.com

Viagra is not just meant to restore male sexual powers, it can also be used to treat enlarged hearts. Enlarged Heart with viagra could be possible according to a new research done in treating enlarged hearts in laboratory mice.

Viagra scientifically known as sildenafil citrate was good in treatment of enlargement and thickening of the heart in male mice. Viagra was also effective in controlling the further growth of the heart muscle. Sildenafil has shown positive results as it reversed the growth and damage that had already taken place in the heart.

Dr. Richard Stein, a national spokesman for the American Heart Association said that whatever works on mice, can be applied to humans also, but the trials on human subjects are expected to kick off later this year.

Dr. Hunter Champion, an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine was co-author in the study published on 23 Jan. He was positive on the results they got in treating mice Viagra. Humans will get the similar doses and hopes are strong in treating heart ailments.

Enlargment and thickening of the heart muscles also known as hypertrophy can be blocked effectively using Viagra.

High blood pressure can lead to cardiac hypertrophy, a thickening of the heart muscle brought on because the heart has to pump harder to get its job done. At least one fourth of people with high blood pressure have cardiac hypertrophy, which also increases the risk of heart failure or sudden death.

In an experiment, the researchers gave Viagra to a group of male mice that had already developed hypertrophy. After two weeks, fibrosis and muscle growth almost completely disappeared in the mice given Viagra while hearts continued to grow in the control mice.

Viagra works, both in the heart and the penis, by inhibiting an enzyme called PDE5A.

In the penis, however, PDE5A relaxes the smooth muscle, allowing the blood to flow and nature to resume its course.

By contrast, in the heart muscle, rather than producing a direct relaxation response, PDE5A helps break down cyclic GMP, a molecule that acts to curb stresses and overgrowth in the heart.

Experts had not previously known that PDE5A was involved in heart function. They had also suspected that excessive heart muscle growth was an adaptive response to malfunction in the heart.

Viagra was originally developed to dilate coronary blood vessels in people with angina. It didn't work well for angina pain but was revealed to have the erectile dysfunction effect and became a medicine for re-gaining sexual powers.

Researchers will also be looking to see if Viagra has any effect on other systems in the body.

Viagra is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction. The makers of Viagra were not involved in the new study and it was an independent study. The work was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association

The Johns Hopkins study is published in the Jan. 23 online edition of the journal Nature Medicine.

Interesting Meeting with an ICICI Bank Security Guad

Today i went to ICICI bank, Gandhinagar for opening a new account. It was around 9:30 Pm When i enquired the guard told me "the bank has closed but you can leave your contact with me and tomorrow when the concerned person will come i will ask him to contact you". I said ok and did the needful.

After that he asked me what job you do? I told i am doing a Btech. He said very good. I am very happy. then i asked about him and his family. He says "i have my family in gandhinagar". Everything fine by now. then he starts telling story of his son. "I have a son. I spent Rs 55000, god him admission in NIIT course, but he got into wrong company of some not so good guys and spoiled his life." He was very sad while telling, not bcoz he spent a lot money but bcoz of the bad-luck of his son. Then he started telling that you should study well, do run after girls and etc etc.

The point to be noticed is the tone and feelings with which he was telling me all this. It was the voice of a sad disappointed father who was not happy with the progress of his son. We should take some lesson from this talk and do something which makes our parents proud.. Isn't it?

Tsunami: What has to happen will happen

I got this appaling news from one of my friends. This is one of the example which makes me feel that what has to happen will happen for it is not in our hands to control what is going to happen.
Below are exceprt from Columbo Times...
On 26th Dec '04 early morning several hrs before the catastrophy happened,

Honolulu Tsunami Monitoring center have been trying to call our
Meteorological Dept. monitoring center in Palekelle and Colombo but
failed. They also got in touch with presidents' office however it was
informed that she's out of the island on a private vacation.

Finally they called Prime minister's secretariat, but Prime minister was
out on his morning walk. Thinking at least it's best to keep him vigilant
on this, the Honolulu officials left the message with the person who
picked up the phone to inform Prime minister that there's a Tsunami coming
from Indonesia.

On prime minister's return, the operator told prime minister about the
call, said T. Sunami from Indonesia is arriving in 2 hrs. Prime minister
promptly took action to send a delegation to Katunayake Airport with name
boards ' Welcome Mr. T. Sunami - Indonesia..

Discussion: The truth behind chanting Ram naam Satya hai

NOTE: the phrase "ram naam satya hai" is in hidi language.

For some time i had been thinking that why people say "Ram naam Satya hai" when people die. Ram naam is always a truth and will always remain one. then why say ram naam satya hai when a person dies. Infact nowdays it has become synonymous to death. we now tend to associate ram naam satya hai with death. if we hear ram naam satya hai, we think somebody must have died. what is to think is why people say ram naam satya hai at death and how did it came into existence.

I asked this to one of my professors here at my institute, Prof. Ganesh Devy. The following are excerpts from the hobnob.

In older times there was no such ritual to say ram naam satya hai. he says that he does not remember such a ritual when he was young. In earlier days distance between the cremation ground and home was small. People used to have cremation ground in the backyard or at a short distance. As time passed by and population increased, distance between the cremation gound and home increased. Now how one should utilize time while the body is being taken to the cremation ground. We should not talk as it is not suitable to the situation. So people took to chanting ram naam satya hai to occupy themselves. It was just a social change which happened with time. If you have noticed, non-hindi speaking commumities also say ram naam satya hai in hindi and not in their local/regional language.People say ram naam satya hai just for saying. Just like in all hindu marriages, we have shlokas in sanskrit. It has no relation with ram, life after death, or anything like that. this just happened as a social change and thats all. After sometime we may have a situation when this say be replaced some kind of music denoting death. Nowdays we have special kind of music (with shahnai) which denotes that a marriage is taking place. After some, when the population increases so much that there will be shortage of land, then people might take to cremating their near and dear ones with sophisticated scientific equipments like electric furnace. and then may be the ritual of saying ram naam satya hai will change.

DATA: on How Society has moved on in US

The following information is courtesy my friend Arun Garg. It appears in book "Can Asians Think?" by Kishore Mahbubani.

The united states has untertaken a massive social experiment, tearing down social institution after social institution that restrained the invidual. The results have been disastrous. Since 1960 the US population has increased 41% percent, while violent crime has risen by 560 percent, single-mother births by 419%, divorce rates by 300%, and the percentage of children living in single parent homes by 300%. This is massive social decay. Many a society shdders at the prospect of this happening on its shores. But instead of travelling overseas with humality. Americans confidently preach the virtues of unfettered individual freedom, blithely ignoring the visible social consequences.

Do u still want to fly america??

Miss digital world 2005

The man behind the event is Franz Cerami, an Italian promoter who's trying to start the world's first CG talent agency. His dream is to manage a bevy of virtual beauties, posing and costuming them for pinup calendars, videogames, ads, and movies. The benefits of digital models are obvious - they never age, never have bad hair days, and can be on location in Tokyo, Paris, and Hollywood simultaneously.

NEWS:Yoga saved NRIs trapped inside WTC

The following is a copy of news that appeared at http://hindustatimes.com

Yoga helped a group of non-resident Indians (NRIs) live through the heat and suffocation inside New York's World Trade Center, a survivor of the September 11 terrorist attack claimed on Monday.

Brahmkumar Ramprakash, a US citizen of Indian origin, said 80 NRIs who regularly practised breathing exercises in yoga handled respiratory problems for up to 45 minutes after terrorists flew hijacked aeroplanes into the building in 2001.

Ramprakash, an engineer, was speaking at a lecture organised by the local chapter of the Brahma Kumari Ishwariya Vishwavidyalaya. He had been trapped on the 64th floor of the 110-storey World Trade Center.

"Intolerable heat and suffocation engulfed the building after the plane crashed. People ended their lives by jumping off the high-rise because they couldn't breathe. Jumping out was an easier way than being roasted," he said.

Ramprakash claimed yoga helped the Indians use the limited oxygen available perfectly and emerge out the building safe.
