Check this out: real incident

This is a real incident that happened in a local hospital in Bangalore. A 4
year old girl was admitted due to leg fracture. As it was an open fracture,
she had to undergo an operation to stitch the protruding bone back in
place.

Though it was quite a minor operation, she was hooked on to life support
system, as a part of the process. The doctors had to input some data prior
to the operation to suit different conditions.

Thereafter, the operation proceeded. Half way through the process, the
life support system suddenly went dead.

The culprit:- Some one was using his/her hand-phone outside the
Operation theatre.. And the frequency had affected the system.

They tried to track the fellow but to no avail. The little girl, young
And innocent as! she was, died soon after. Sad to say, she was an only
child.

"Message:- Be compassionate! Do not use your hand phone / mobiles
specially at any hospitals or within the Aircraft or any places where you
are told not to use it.. You might not be caught in the act, but you might
have killed someone without knowing.

" Sometimes it's a matter of Life & Death....!!!!

Please pass this to as many, since most of us are just not aware of the
seriousness of this issue.

Home made food at last

Hi all,
yesterday was a special day.. three of us decide to cook food for ourselves. We were fed of college food. We bought bhania, potato, peas. garam masala and ghee.. Then we purchased 1 litre of milk and make paneer out of it.. making paneer is easy.. just when the milk has boiled enough, put some lemon into it and you will get paneer.. After making paneer and boiling potatoes.. we made paste for putting in the vegetable..we made paster out of tomato, onion and masalas..
We also bought ghee for preperation of vegetables.. then we made paneer/aloo sabji.. We were very sceptical about how much salt should we put in. So we put salt in small increments and then tasted the vegetable if more of salt is needed. But we had put a little bit extra water but it did not hurt.
We took 22 chappaties from our college canteen.
Dinner was great. We had cooked fabulously. it was fun and filling.

news: Testing Darwin

Discover (02/05) Vol. 26, No. 2, P. 28; Zimmer, Carl

Scientists at Michigan State University's Digital Evolution Laboratory are using digital organisms to explore and test Darwin's theories. These organisms consist of command strings that can replicate themselves into tens of thousands of copies within minutes, and they can also mutate and compete with each other; the life cycle of each generation is tracked using the Avida software program. Researchers determined with Avida that digital organisms, like their real-world counterparts, evolve in spasms, and the software's flexibility and speed has encouraged them to put some of the most cherished tenets of evolutionary science to the test. One experiment concentrated on how complex organisms evolve from simple ones by documenting the evolution of a complex operation in which binary numbers are compared bit by bit to see if they are equal:
The Avida team established rewards for simpler operations and bigger rewards for more sophisticated operations, and then watched as the digital organisms replicated for 16,000 generations; the experiment was repeated 50 times, and the organisms in the 23 successful tests evolved along different evolutionary paths, illustrating Darwin's theory that the same function can evolve in diverse ways. Another experiment explored how organisms continue to evolve despite seemingly unbreakable controls, and Digital Evolution Laboratory director Charles Ofria devised a scheme designed to halt adaptation by killing off organisms that exhibited beneficial mutations. The digital life-forms defied Ofria's best attempts to control their evolution by essentially "playing dead" and not processing numbers when he tested them for mutations. The Avida team is also developing new commands that will enable digital organisms to exchange information packages in a test for cooperation, and Ofria thinks a successful outcome would indicate that the organisms could maybe be coaxed into cooperatively solving real-world problems.

Do we need a kissing school?

This is from Indiatimes website

There’s more to a kiss than meets the lips, as couples are learning at a kissing school in Seattle. Psychotherapist Cherie Byrd has been helping men and women in perfecting the art of kissing. Since 1998, more than 500 couples have paid $275 to learn Byrd’s secrets for giving or receiving a passionate kiss.
On a typical class day, up to a dozen couples create “love nests” with sleeping bags and overstuffed pillows on the carpeted floor of the classroom. Each class begins with foot rubs, back-to-back dancing and tender kisses on the hand. Students slowly graduate to neck nibbles, ear exploration and finally lip locks. As Byrd guides couples through exercises, such as kissing only the bottom lip or licking an ear, soft music plays. While most students are couples, singles are also welcome to take classes, provided they don’t mind kissing total strangers.
The question is do we need to learn the art of kissing from a school? Is it not supposed to come naturally to us? While trying to perfect the art will we not kill the romance and passion involved in the whole act? Do we need a kissing school in India?

Problems with Email Forwarding

we all forward emails now and then. But seldom we realize that we are also sending email addresses of our pals which may be misused. the person to whom you are forwarding may not do something with that email addresses, but there is a possibility that it might reach a hand which will misuse it. I have seen it being misused by some students on my campus. what r ur thoughts on this!
According to me all major email providers should provide an option asking whether you want to obfuscate the email addresses present in forwarded email message. This is quite easy but none of the major email providers paid attention to it.
I have now started working on developing a plug in for a squirrelmail email client which will provide this feature if that plugin is installed.

11-month baby survives fall from third floor

this news is also from Times of INDIA, Ahmedabad Issue
It was a miraculous escape for an 11-month baby girl, Ishita Shah, who survived a fall from the third floor of a residential colony in the Satellite area almost without a scratch.
“It is a miraculous escape for this child who has suffered no bleeding or injury despite falling from a height of 300 feet. We have performed CT scan and carried out all tests and she is perfectly normal except for a minor crack in the foot”, said attending doctor at Thackersinh Hospital, Kamlesh Gajjar.
Ishita had toppled over from the balcony of her maternal grandparents’ flat in P & T Colony when her mother left her alone for a few seconds to fetch a change of clothes. “She just flipped over the cot on which I had put her. I became hysterical and was sure that she would die. I thank God for saving her and that too without any injury”, Ishita’s mother Chetna told.

Viagra’s a life-saver now

This news is from TIMES OF INDIA dated 17 Feb. Ahmedabad Issue
Call it Viagra’s double dash. The sex pill with many ‘‘satisfied’’ customers is apparently emerging as a lifesaving formulation in ICUs here. It is not just men with performance anxiety, but even parents of children with life-threatening conditions who are praising the blue pill. Viva Viagra.

At Jaslok Hospital, a team of nephrologists, headed by Dr MM Bahadur, recently revived a 15-year-old girl with high BP and kidney failure. The effort is being lauded by the European peer-reviewed Nehprology, Dialysis Transplantation Journal as ‘‘the first such case reported worldwide’’.

Last month, an eight-day-old baby, born prematurely, with ‘‘right to left shunt’’ (impure blood mixing with pure blood) survived after being given Viagra. ‘‘Even if chemists must have wondered why my resident doctor wanted Viagra at 8 in the morning, it was a worthwhile effort as the baby stabilised taking Viagra dissolved in water,’’ recalls Dr Subhash Daga of Cama Hospital.
Both cases prove that Viagra, which, incidentally, failed trials as a blood pressure reduction agent, can work wonders in experienced hands.

MIRACLE DRUG

• Viagra reduced escalating blood pressure of 15-yr-old girl with kidney failure when nothing else could do the trick for 5 days.

• 8-month-baby, born prematurely with problem of impure blood mixing with pure blood survived after being given Viagra.

Extended learning for Higher Educational Institutions

This is a copy of the letter that i sent to my director. It is outcome of my discussion with director sir on Sunday Feb 13.

Current situation in India

Currently out of lakhs of students that graduate every year about 5-10% of them are equipped with skills which are necessary for them to doing well when they join any industry or for that matter want to pursue higher education and an institution of repute. The reason for this is simple. They do not get the kind of education that should be imparted to them. And this is because there is lack of quality educational facility. And the most important of them is the high quality teachers and study material. Now, getting high quality teachers for so many institutions is not easy and is a very time consuming task. The other option is that educational institutions that have high degree of educational standards should help in raising the standards of other institutions that have similar courses. The focus of this short proposal is on ICT as the author does have necessary details about other braches of engineering.

What role can DA-IICT play in shaping the ICT education in INDIA?

We at DA-IICT have the privilege of having very good and competent professors. All we need is to harness this scarce resource. There are not many institutions where we have likes of Prof. Ranendra Biswas, Prof. Dipankar Nagchouduri, Prof. Ashok Amin, Prof. V P Sinha etc…to name a few. We can do numerous things. We can record the lectures, digitise the Course Lectures, we can prepare animations for helping in visualization of difficult concepts. Live streaming of lectures may not work as hard synchronization is needed for that and it may be possible every time. Now! We need to decide what all should be digitised and what animations should be made. This purely depends on individual courses. Talking with faculty teaching the course might be helpful. Courses of utmost importance are the foundation courses. Solid base is needed for building the students. I am presenting some courses that require immediate attention. The courses are:
1.Specific Topics in Structures Programming
  • We need powerful animations to help students learn about pointers, stacks, Linked Lists, Trees, File handling. There are umpteen number of books available in the market.
2. Data and File Structure
  • All the data structures can be very well understood when presented as an animation to the students. This will immediately strike the students as to what is going on there.

3. Linear Algebra

  • There are specific topics which may be shown using animation to establish stronghold in key topics.

  • It also requires lectures on important topics to be recorded and provided to students for offline viewing.

4. Basics of Communication System

  • This course can immensely benefit from animations. Animations can be very effectively used for showing different kind of modulation techniques like Amplitude Modulation etc… This course is a very good candidate for animations.

  • Recording of lectures is also needed

5. Digital Signal Processing

  • This course requires all its lectures to be recorded and provide to students

  • In addition, quality animation on important topics will enhance the understanding of students.

There are several other courses that need to be dealt similarly, but that will come later. This is a first step towards a new kind of education that will create revolutions.

From where will workforce come from?

Now, the question is who will make these things happen. The answer is, Students who have undertaken these courses. They need to have good understanding of the concerned course, as it will be needed to make correct animations. This will at the same time enhance the knowledge of the student, as there is no room for mistakes in animations. Few students can take up a course and distribute among themselves the topics that need to be dealt with. A senior student who has interest in the subject and did well can supervise them. And, when the animations have been made they can be discussed with the faculty about their content and correctness. Once thing that needs to be taken care of is that there should not be too much of spoon-feeding as it will not allow/motivate the student using it to think on its own. So the animations also need to be filled up with intelligent questions, review questions. There can be a variety of questions that can be put up in the animations.

What can it do INDIA?

I believe if the aforementioned task is done in time, we can make drastic impact on the students learning ICT courses. Once we have quality students, we will have quality work and at the end of it we will have a better shining INDIA, which will be a superpower in ICT. We will be having direct impact on lives of thousands of individuals that in turn will impact several others. Education is a means towards higher standards of living and quality individuals. This is a step in the right direction towards a new kind of learning, which has potential far reaching that those of conventional books. It will change lives forever. As said by Late. Shri. Dhirubhai Ambani “Knowledge is Power” and really it is.

We may also be able to generate money from this work.

HOME FOOD: Best food

When i was at my home, i would make all sort of excuses so that i could eat outside home. Little did i realize that i will soon be in college were i will eat all kinds of things which we get in a restaurant. I have been in college for 3 1/2 years. and now i hate eating in college canteen or food courts. Not even a single day passes when i do not wander around various food courts to see which foodis least worst in eating. I am just fed up of eating outside. It is a nightmare for me to eat in my college.

But it is all the same. Food which you eat daily, you like it initially and then the taste dies away as time passes by. So what is required is to have a balance between eating at home and hanging at city restaurants. And trying new things at home. Otherwise it is the same story.

Am i the only one who feels like this, or you also feel the same? Do comment your thoughts

WHAT HAS happened to me

Valentine's day: Wanna do something

So!! Are you thinking u will propose somebody tomorrow? If you are in a dilemma what to do! just go ahead and propose! If he/she accepts, that is too good and if he/she doesn't she was never yours.. and you wont regret in future that you could not propose him/her.
ok!, now that you have decided to propose, when and where is the question. If you want my opinion, just before he/she goes to bed. If not in person then by phone, if he/she has one. then he/she can give you some though throughout the night.. and if he/she likes you then there are bright chances that you will be a winner.
If you do not like this, then do it at a time when he/she is free and in mood. MOOD is important can have drastic effects.
WISH YOU GOOD LUCK

NEWS: South Korea’s Grand Telecom Plan

This peice of information is from IndiaITweekly magazine.
International— Discussions about Asian telecom often begin and end with India and China. However, another country is secretly making a name for itself. In recent weeks, South Korean companies have signed deals with Earthlink, Nortel, and Verizon Wireless. Executives and government officials expect the trend to accelerate as the benefits of cooperation become more
pronounced and political and trade policies continue evolving. San Hoon Lee, a director at South Korea’s Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), said that new partnerships represent a shift in how companies perceive themselves. Conglomerates, known as chaebols, aspire to be global forces, not just South Korean companies selling overseas. Economic reforms have moved the country “away from a centrally planned, governmentdirected investment model toward a more marketoriented one,” a U.S. State Department document stated. North American firms are going to South Korea to catch a glimpse into the future. The government subsidizes broadband connections, which has led to the best high-speed internet penetration rates in the world. According to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, there are 21.3 high-speed internet subscribers per 100 people in South Korea as compared to only 6.9 in the U.S. Sean Ryan, a spokesman for iPark stated in a press conference that the industry is not content with stopping at G3 technology. South Korean companies want to develop prototypes and core technologies for fourthgeneration mobile communications by 2007. Research is also currently being conducted on home networking technologies and digital multimedia broadcasting technologies for consumers. The technology is designed to have advantages overvideo-on-demand , 3G, and other existing services. “Some South Korean companies are doing things that you wouldn’t see over here,” Ryan said. “U.S. companies are using the market to gauge when we’re ready for it.” The recent $440 million deal between Earthlink and SK Telecom may be the tip of the iceberg in deals to come.

“Kids in Korea are downloading video on their phones, watching television, and listening to
music. They’re using locationbased services and finding their friends wherever they are.” -
Sky Dayton,
Chairman of Earthlink
